In my management class a while back my professor said something that kind of irked me. He said that the cynical should be avoided. After thinking this through I've come to the conclusion that we are all cynics at heart. We build fences to separate borders, we keep locks on our doors, we have access codes on our debit cards and passwords on our accounts. How can it be that cynics are to be avoided when they are the ones who are more conscious of the threats around us.
I understand that some people are excessively paranoid over some issues, but I think that knowing what is out there and thinking about it is the best way to avoid an unneccessarily avoidable situation of treachery, theft, or ignorance can benefit all of us at some time or another. Hmm.. Any thoughts?

I think your professor was maybe thinking that people who put everything down or in a bad light can destroy the energy to go forward with a promising project. This is true in many cases.
However, it's also true that cynics can bring in good truths that naive optimists can easily overlook. In studies, pessimistic, even depressed people are more realistic in evaluating their own abilities than other people (however, less effective in the end). A project guided purely by enthusiasts may look childish and underdeveloped in the end. Therefore an ideal group should comprise people with different approaches.
In reality, cynicism is too limited a factor to determine a persons worth. Their intelligence, honesty, moral integrity, respect for others, experience or even sense of humor can all modify or override that character trait significantly.
It's good to avoid people who have a negative effect on oneself is probably more true.

i think that you need it in measured limited doses to keep it real. But you also need hope/altruism/optimism to get by. So get a balance.
