I have a 1993 Mercury Sable with 165k on it. It had been running fine, but suddenly two weeks ago it began to have a problem with stalling. I initially attributed it to the the wet and cold weather. I could start the car, but as soon as I'd take it out of park the engine would stall. I let it be for a couple days, when it had warmed and dried up. The car started, and then I took it around the block. The second turn I took, the car stalled out mid turn. The engine wouldn't turn over at that point after a couple tries. I was ready to push it to a parked position on the side of the street, but then gave it one more go and it started. I drove it back to my place and haven't dared drive it anywhere since. Any ideas?

<>First guess would be a fuel-related problem, either fuel filter and/or fuel pump (if you change the pump, change the filter, too!).

How does it run when it is running. Any smoke or loud noises? When you say "until I have to stop" do you when come to a stop at a light or turn off the car? Pull the dipstick and check the engine oil? Does it look milky? If so it is probably a blown head gasket If not, probably the alternator.
