Do you try to hold the door for a girl/woman to be able to walk in ahead of you or just hurry in and let her get the door herself?

Also were you taught/told that you should hold the door at a certain age (teen) or was it just a polite thing to do that you learned without being told?
I have a son and was curious...thanks.

Ladies first - except when walking down stairs. The gentleman walks in front of the lady going down stairs so that if she slips, she can grab him.

I was taught very young.

I was taught that as a child, and I noticed some things that seem really backward while and at the same time regressive yet counterproductive.

One is the lady will usually be carrying something large and bulky, the guy will have nothing in his hands but doesn't help her carry the stuff, just opens the door.

But I believe that it is almost a natural thing to do, the man is larger than the woman, so he assumes the protective role, just as a built in instinct.

I always hold it if someone is coming right after me. man or woman. It's just polite, what are you going to do pull the door open and try to slip in before the other person can get through the door.

Tell him pull door, ladies first. Push door, gentlemen first.

i would go out of my way to hold a door open for a lady. i wasn't specifically taught this, i probably just picked it up in movies and i liked the idea of making the woman feel special. it's not like it's such a major effort, but the effect is a wonderful.

I hold the door for children, women, the elderly, people who've got there hands full & the disabled. Etc
I don't think things like this have to be taught.

I get them all except those automatic doors... like at a Wal-Mart.

That always includes car doors too. But then I'll get the door for anyone - especially kids and older folks. I'm just nice like that.
