Meters per man per day would be ...
(140/36)/21 = (50/X)/18

Multiply both sides by 21

140/36 = (21(50/X))/18

Multiply both sides by 18

18(140/36) = 21(50/X)
140/2 = 21(50/X)
70 = 1050/X

Multiply both sides by X
70x = 1050

Divide both sides by 70
X = 1050/70 = 15 men

What is consistant is the meters of wall built per man per day,
which is given in the first scenario as:

140meters / 36men / 21 days

There is no need to work this out because the rate will
be the same with any length wall, any number of men and
a given number of days.

To solve this, simply equate the two fractions and solve for
the missing days:
(140meters) / (36men*21days) = (50meters) / ( x men * 18days)

140 / 36 / 21 = 50 / x / 18 multiply both sides by "x" to get
x * 140 / 36 / 21 = 50 / 18 divide both sides by 140
x / 36 / 21 = 50 / 18 / 140 multiply both sides by 21
x / 36 = 21 * 50 / 18 / 140 multiply both sides by 36
x = 36 * 21 * 50 / 18 / 140 multiply out to solve for x
x = 37800 / 18 / 140
x = 2100 / 140
x = 15

First we need to determine how long a segment of wall can be built in one man-day.

1 man-day = 140/(36*21) = 5/27 m
1 man can build 5/27m of wall in one day.

1 man can built (18)(5/27) = 10/3 m of wall in 18 days.

The number of men neede to build 50 m of wall in 18 days is:

50/(10/3) = 150/10 = 15 men

15 men can build 50 m of wall in 18 days.

let x = the men req'd

36men = 140m/21days or 6.66667 m/day
x = 50m/18days or 2.777778 m/day

through ratio and proportion, we can find;

x = 36men ( 2.777778m/day) / 6.6666667 m/daY
X = 15Men
