The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. There were many Republics of the former Soviet Union. They described themselves as socialists, but that is not a very good description of what became a brutal socialist dictatorship ruled for a long time by Joseph Stalin, and several others since. It is what replaced The ruling monarcchy of the Tzars, brought about by Lenin just before 1920.
