Every time I receive a book in the mail, it's been opened by the mailman or the post office...am I in trouble?

This seems to happen only when things are sent media rate, though two books sent to me from overseas have also been opened.

Am I on the Homeland Security watch-list (I used to be involved in left-wing activist politics) or are they just really strict about media rate mail?

The US can open media rate mail without a search warrant, but do I have grounds for hiring a lawyer? It happened again today for about the 8th or 9th time...

Why does that surprise you? Don't you support the Patriot Act? The government wants to know what you read to better protect you from those "evil doers" that hate our way of life! Haven't you heard all that ad nauseum? Are you not convinced yet?

Johnny if it makes you feel any better they do the same with any package I sent to my mom in the USA (I'm in the UK) or from there to here.

The box will have a nice hole in it with an attached note "Checked by Homeland Security".

I'm glad that they made sure that the baby blanket my mom sent for my little one didn't explode.

First you need to stop payments on any checks that he has written to himself, then you need to report him, not only to the police but also to the postal services. What he is doing is thieft and fraud, he will be facing some serious charges. As for assulting him, although that would be tempting, for your sake I wouldn't, he could then charge you with assult. Good luck to you, and I hope this helps.

I would ask a para-legal or call your state bar association and get some free advice before you get a lawyer, but they may be helpful in telling you if your case warrants investigation and a cause to sue.

Have you reported it to your postmaster? Sounds like someone at the PO may have sticky fingers.
