A sin, in my opinion, is a "crime" that societies and communities define. There are sins in some areas of the world that are considered normal behavior elsewhere. When visiting a foreign country quite different from your own you may want to study their cultures and laws. You may commit a sin or break a law that you did not know existed. I think that religion is a helpful tool (usually) that discourages unwelcome behavior and encourages positive behavior in our communities. I believe we hurt ourselves when we hurt others and that sins are actions that are intended to hurt others.

There is no such thing and no one keeps tabs on what you do to decide where you go after you die based on sins. At one time when mankind was in a primitive stage, some people created a code of conduct for all to follow.
You know that the moment someone gives a suggestion or rule there will be opposition from others. To counter this, those who issued this rule made it be known that 'God' gave it to them. Since no one could question these 'gods' they were accepted. In course of time some of these rules became laws and you better adhere to the laws of the country where you live, because other wise you will get jugged. Now all other taboos have no meaning. So if something comes up and you want to know if it is a sin, simply see if there is a law against it. If not then do as you will.
I hope you will be more clear after you read the blog below.

There are many ways to define this , but I think the most accurate is : the sin is going against God`s eternal laws , and simpler-against the truth . And these laws doesn`t consist into the human moral or juridical code . They confer them basis , but there aren`t the same thing . One of these celestial laws are given by The New Testament : love God and not having any other gods than Him , and love the neighbour . These are enough for the common people , and if we `d follow them accurately , any other laws weren`t necessary .
As for the other unwritten God`s rules , it has to graduate some knowledge levels in order to find them out ( or to be given to you ). But , this is another story . And , anyway , you can feel them inside ( if you try to come up to Him .)

It's crap. "Sin" is when you break a religious rule. Some religious rules are based in reality. I.e., don't kill people and don't steal stuff. Makes perfect sense, and it's part of secular law. Others, like don't eat pork or beef or shellfish and hate gay people don't make any sense at all.
Religious people like to say that morality comes only from religion, but that's not true. Religions have moral codes, but so do doctors and lawyers. Religion is not the only source of moral rules.
I like to think of sin as breaking one of those social taboos that are not encoded in secular law. It doesn't usually harm anyone but gets all kinds of horrified looks. Think of it as a party foul and you won't go far wrong.

To do needless harm to creation and or the self. This goes beyond the mere physical. Such harms can be done in ignorance or willing in spite of adequate knowledge. If these harms are done in ignorance I would see them more as dysfunctions than "sins". I guess it is all how you term it but a knowledgeable action of wrong is a sin in my book.

"God dwells within you as you". Having Desire for knowledge of Good & evil created duality, double vision. Believing that you exist separate and apart from God. Desire is the only "sin" all others derive from this one. I have heard it said that the definition of sin, is anything said or done that is not for the ultimate good of all concerned. Our life circumstances and destiny are created by Desire, through the actions we perform through thought, word or deed. Karma.

Sin is first a nature inherited through Adam and Eve. Because of this "fallen nature," we commit "sin" or an act of disobedience against God. Sin can also be an omission - "He who knows to do good and doesn't do it, to him it is sin." We didn't act in accordance to God's will. Christ came to save us from the nature of sin, and to daily purge us from the acts of sin and the omissions of sin. We do not have to live in sin, Christ overcame it for us.

an intentional (though unintentional also) action/doing which gives great harm mentally & physically to the other is a sin, like killing of a child, raping, beating, etc.etc. but it very much depends on situation to situation.
