If you are using windows xp, do a system restore to a date when things worked properly. It is that simple.

click on my computer icon and then
right click on any disk icon and select properties
properties panel opens
click on Tools tab
Under error checking, there is a button named check now
check disk panel opens
select both the options there and click on the button named start now. If it is C drive then the checking will take place when you restart the computer, for all other drives it takes place immediately
