It's an excuse. Just as 'attention hyperactive disorder' or whatever it is called is just an excuse for bad behaviour. Society now has a tendency to try and excuse weak bad behaviour by saying that it is a disease or disorder, whereas in fact it is just a lack of backbone in addressing one's antisocial traits or weakness of character.

I think there is a difference between an addiction and a weak will. With an addiction there can be withdrawal symptoms for some time after the removal of the personality, whereas if the personality is removed from a weak-willed person then there is no harm or consequences.

A weak willed person is like a child. An addictive personality can be an adult, a child, and sometimes a parent.

If you play mind games with people, and you enjoy the games, then the game can be addictive. When you stop playing the game, or when the game ends, symptoms similar to grief can occur. People get over grief, but in the short term the grief indicates a withdrawal symptom of an addictive personality.

I believe someone can have an addictive personality. That doesn't mean that person doesn't have common sense. Using this as an excuse to be an idiot doesn't fly especially if you know you have this problem. If that was okay, anyone could use that excuse to indulge in stupid things. ---Oh it's OK I spent ALL of your college fund on shoes, I have an addictive personality... it's OK I kept eating until I weighed 400lbs., I have an addicted personality.--- Give me a break!!!!!!!!

I don't think so. It might be an excuse to be a complete moron though. I know this woman and she has a very addictie personallity, she seems very nice and funny but it's not until you get to know her you find out that she is a complete phsycopathic, two faced biatch. Weak willed I'm not sure?

How condescending it would be to assume that anyone is weak willed, we are human beings and with that go both strength and frailty. Winston churchill liked his cigars and a drink and suffered from depression but he still managed to get the job done!

Addictive personality is a clinical psychological diagnosis.
People who are weak-will, self indulgent or just plain selfish may use the term to describe themselves but that doesn't mean they've undergone any assessment to prove it.

I think it's true for some people, but most people use it as an excuse for their behavior.
