Are we as a society becoming so reliant on machines to think and do tasks for us that we will eventually be incapable of doing anything by ourselves?

I answered something along these lines the other day. It is most certainly making people lazier, and quite possibly dumber. Kids use calculators in Math now, hop on the Internet instead of using an encyclopedia, have you seen the numbers and abbreviations they use because they are too lazy to type out full words? People don't even need to know how to spell anymore because of spell check, there are other programs and web sites that check grammar and other things. The teens have people writing essays, etc for them through the Internet. It is a wonderful tool, but people need to remember how to do things on their own. If one day the Internet disappears for whatever reason, people would be completely lost. I recommend watching the movie "Idiocracy" and you'll see where we might be headed !!!

Computers are TOOLS, of a more ingenious type - and you have to know how to use them, sometimes you have to be a specialist in that matter, or a specialized one. We have automobiles as "tools" that we use for transportation - but we must know how to use them, and we must be certified to use them, as much as we have sewing-machines that are used to manufacture our clothes (nowadays such sewing-machines are as advanced as computers - in fact they contain computers in their inner core.

If you are able to manage a computer you are not "stupid", and a computer doesn't make anybody "stupider". If you did not have access to this tool which is called a computer you would not have been able to write what you are writing and I would not be able to "immediately" see the question-declaration that you have posted. If you did not have a typing-machine, you would not be able to write the way one writes on paper thru the use of a typing-machine. Then you may go backwards, to the pencil, to the alphabet, to the pre-alphabetization, to the time of the cave when your language was nearly similar to that of a coyote or to that of any other wild beast.

Thru using a computer you may do many things that can be done thru the use of a computer, provided that you know, or find out, how to. In fact a computer isn't anymore anything so special, and there are too many things that you can't do thru a computer. A computer is just a machine consisting of a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a cpu, some software, and so that's all. We need to contrive something more advanced than a computer, and we need more intelligence. But there is a transcendental meaning behind all this that we are not able to grasp. Not yet. Maybe never.

Computers are like libraries just walking in the door and looking around doesn't make you smarter. That's what 90% of people do. Too many take opinion for fact. If the questions I read everyday in Answers are any gauge the answer is no they don't. I mean these dolts can get better info faster and with more reliabilty just by entering the subject into any search engine but NOOOOO! they can't figure this out...hell half of them can't even find an on-line dictionary.

Computers, in my opinion, do not make people anything. A machine cannot function yet without the benefit of man/woman. The only thing able to make us dumber, (stupider is not a word), is ourselves. Remember what it was like to read a book? Hardly ever happens now with people wasting all their time with hand held games and the like.

I don't think smart to stupider enters into the equation, what I do think is that computers are making us more lazy than we are.! Today out entire defense system is managed by computers, if there is a power failure then what are we going to? From the 1900's until after WW2, inventors and social philosphers went to liibraries to read other commentators, not today! Major accomplishments were make during this period of time.

Throughout the history we have been doing the same. i.e. let others do the thinking for us. This leads to growth of leaders and intellectuals. In the today's world also this is the same. Intellectuals will keep on comming. So eventually there will always be some human beings who will be intelligent enough.

No matter what man had invented-- Your rights and priviledges as a human being WILL NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU!!! You are born a human till the day you died!!! No machine is more superior than YOU whom GOD had created in HIS LIVING IMAGE AND LIKENESS!!! Man- made machines are simply TOOLS-- They can break down, repaired and be overhauled!!! As humans--WE have the brains to create.MACHINES DO NOT!!! Coming to intelligent--IT IS UP TO YOU TO DECIDE IF YOU WANT TO BE SMART OR NOT!!! If you choose to be lazy to challenge your mind and remain inactive, WHOSE FAULT IS IT?? You cannot blame a machine for your own stupidity!! There are people in this world who had outsmart computers!!! I rest my case!!!

For those of us who are surfing celebrity and porn sites, stupider. For those of us who are learning to program python, C and assembly language, smarter. Any tool can be used well or badly. All depends on the direction chosen. The question is not a good one.
