A freight forwarder is a person that handles moving freight from one place to another and taking care of all necessary paper work. Fed ex, DHL UPS are carriers. A forwarder may elect to use one of those carriers and charge for filling out the same paperwork as anyone else. freight forwarders usually handle import and export shipments to foreign countries and handle all the paperwork necessary such as customs paperwork, confirming if shipment is considered hazardous goods or not.

Not in the traditional sense.

We use a freight forwarder to ship product into Mexico.

We ship to them (our forwarding company) using common carrier (maybe even as you mentioned, but our loads are too big for them). They take care of the customs paperwork and logistics required to get it to the destination country. They take care of the logistics.

It's almost a hassle to send parcels out of the country.

Hope this helps you understand.

There are freight forwarders who do the actual transportation of goods from one place to another. A company may decide to do this on its own or decide to contract this job to another transport service provider. Most freight forwarding companies contract this service from specialized individuals and companies who ensure that the goods are delivered as required.
