Greetings from Baghdad, Iraq!
This is a question my buddies and I talk about amongst each other quite often, as you can imagine. I feel this conflict is taking so long for 2 reasons:
1. Keep in mind we are involved in 3 (count 'em, THREE!) wars and, sadly, Iraq seems to be the battleground. First there is the war against the insurgents- mainly former baathist who enjoyed privilege under Saddam and are now mad as-all-else because they (and he) have been removed from power. Secondly, there is the "civil-war" here between the Shiaa and Sunni, and we are involved in (or, actually, more "caught in the middle of") that. Thirdly, we are also involved in the broad "War on Terrorism."
Alright, now reason number 2:
2. "What is finishing?" We have no clear definition of what "finishing" is. A number of people of different ideas. Some will say "removing Saddam and establishing a democratic government." To those people we have achieved that objective, ergo we are "victorious." Still yet other people will contend we still have to "stabilize the Iraqi government with more money and American troops." To them we have yet to win...and unfortunately that scenario will take more time and is potentially years down the line. Remember- we're still in Korea 50 years later...
All my best.

Yes we are really fighting terrorism. Why aren't we able to finish it? Do you realize how long this problem has been building? This was all going on long before President Bush was in office and it will not be over when he leaves office. My question is why, when others have known for a long time what was going on and what the eventual outcome had to be of a build-up of terrorists around the world, that something wasn't already being done. President Bush and our troops have taken on an astronomical task and they are doing the right things in the right way. Lets just hope that the next president has the knowledge and the courage to keep up the fight. No matter what the talking heads say, this isn't about a popularity contest!!! God Bless President Bush and God Bless our Troops!!!!!

I think we we re not fighting terrorism alone but also snatching away the rights of the people in the terrorism-affected areas which inspires the common people to take to terrorism as a political tool of last resort. i say this because i have first hand experience of this as i am a Kashmiri

We will be fighting terrorism for the next hundred years or more. The Arabs have long memories, one of their bombers said he was retaliating for the death caused during the Crusades. BTW, most were over by the time Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492.
Terrorists use hit and run tactics and have some local support or threaten to kill loved ones it they exposed. So it is hard to catch them in the act, sort of like cockroaches scattering when you turn on the lights.

We are not fighting terrorists, they are Afghans and Saudis - Bush's friends.
We are fighting Iraqis who are against America invading their country. They are winning the war and have been from the beginning. That's why America is still there and is sending more and more troops.
Bush can kill Saddam over and over or create as many Iraqi 'leaders' as he can conjure up and execute them too. But they will never stop fighting for their country and more Americans will die for the lies and fantasies of an inept president who dares to tell other countries how to behave but abandon his own citizens in a flood and continues to ignore their plight.

Now that first answer should say an awful lot, because this man is fighting in Iraq. No matter what the media spits out, I'll believe a military man who speaks in here before I'd believe anyone else. These guys want to finish what they were sent to do.

Terrorism is a war of attrition. It cannot be finished once and for all, unless the terrorist groups run out of support of the group members and the finances.
