Hey guys.. I have just left school and I live in auckland new zealand. i want to know what the best kind of apprenticeship to do is. I am interested in getting an electrician apprenticeship, building, or marine cabinet making and marine electrician, i just want to know what the best move would be. I dont know things like what the apprenticeship will actually be like and how much money is in it when your qualified. Its hard to choose when all the people i talk to that are involved with hiring apprentices seem like they arent telling you what the job really is like. any help will be appreciated. thanks

I don't know about the unions in new zealand but in the US the electrical union and apprentice program are very good as well as plumbing electrical is alot cleaner most of the time but there are those 100-125 degree attics full of insulation but the highest paying union in the states is the elevator union after a 4 year apprenticeship your base rate is 44.50 an hour in these parts all overtime is double time

i,ve worked in a bodyshop for 18yrs and the money is not very good at the start .the best way to get an apprenticeship is to get yellow pages and phone all the bodyshops in your area.If you stick with it and learn your trade well the pay can be very good.i still enjoy my job very much even after all these years but it can be very hard work .

The jobs are hard and require you to be very focused because you can seriously hurt people if you screw up as an electrician.
They are also very well paid, for those that make it to journeyman, because it is complex work and you can seriously hurt people if you screw up.
And WHY would someone not tell it like it is ?
You are sounding a tiny bit paranoid there . . .
Go back and ask more questions but I suggest you do not dawdle, many serious people are after those apprentice slots and they could be snatched up and gone while you are being indecisive.

check what's more in demand in your area maybe elctrician or carpentry.electrician is the best but you have to find out when you can retire.I belong to the carpet union I can retire in 25 years if you are 18 it means you can retire at age 43.in electrical maybe you can retire in 35 years you have to do research.the only drawback in unions is that you only get paid if there is work if it is slow you might have to retire later.why don't you just go to college and take a course which is in demand there.good luck
