Qualifications for Politicians
Most of our politicians are not persons of profound intellectual capability. To me Bush seems to be a rather extreme case of what generally tends to be the rule in Washington. That a candidate for any particular office has administrative skills is far from enough; they must also have a mind, and a damn good one at that. As I see it, one of the biggest problems facing our nation today is the fact that it is being governed by technobureacratic non-intellects (It has been brought to my attention that at least one senator has the background of a licensed surgeon, but this does not necessarily make him a good politician, much less a thinker).
Why should we require physicians to study medicine for years before they are allowed to practice, and yet fail to impose the same requirement on those whom we nominate for government positions? I think that there should be a law barring any but the most intellectually qualified to run for office. We need persons who are not merely politicians but political scientists. The best of all possible governments are also run by the best of all minds. Plato knew that: We should go back and take a look at what he had to say on this matter.
