My laptop screen broke down. How can I use an external monitor?

My laptop fell down and my screen doesn't display any thing but a back light y shadows. It has a port for a external monitor. I think I could use it to save information from hard drive to DVD. But I don't how to enable the use of an external monitor. When I power it on I hear the sound that it is starting up, and y can see the light of the hard drive activity flashing, which means for me thar it's starting up.

Could some one help me, please?

Hi im joel, if you have an external monitor. connec to video connection SVGA. make sure the loptop is Off then connnect the cable first and turn on the loptop. that's it..
