My brother's apartment burned down (he & his wife, kids, and cat are ok). They're pretty shook up and aren't sure where they'll go from here. I thought I'd make a CD for them, one with songs that could be comforting and encouraging (no need to make them worse). However, most such songs I've found seem to always be about break-ups and that's not what I want. Any suggestions?

Please no songs Britney Spears, Simpson sisters, Nickelback, or boybands/ex-members of boybands. My sister-in-law hates them.

Other than what I mentioned, neither my brother nor his wife have any real objections as far as I know. The oldest child is only five, however the CD is really more for the parents since they're trying to set a good example despite their own anxiety and the fact that they're ticked off at the neighbor who started the fire.

Is Nickelback the only so-called "alternative" group the wife has a problem with (by the way, I don't like them either)? Will the kids (you didn't say how old they were) be listening to this as well, thus the need to avoid songs with inappropriate (by their parents' definition, of course) lyrics? Assuming that these won't be a problem, here (in no particular order) are the songs I tend to listen to when I'm going through a rough patch (some of these have more than one version by different artists out there, I'm just listing what I have):

Otherside - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Everybody Hurts - REM
In The Arms of An Angel - Sarah McLachlan
Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House
Hero - Mariah Carey
You Get What You Give - New Radicals
Under The Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Let It Be - The Beatles
Come Sail Away - Styx
You've Got A Friend - James Taylor
I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly
Faith Of The Heart - Rod Stewart
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
I Can See Clearly Now - Bob Marley
Ordinary Miracle - Sarah McLachlan
Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Lean On Me - The Temptations
I'm Free - Jon Secada

These should help (again, assuming your brother and his wife wouldn't have any objections). Either way, I think it's nice that you're trying to help them through this setback, even if this is all you can really do for them. And my condolences to them as well.

I have two suggestions:

Bon Jovi - "Living on a Prayer"
Granted, the couple in that song is a different situation but consider these lyrics:

"We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot for love"

and

"Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear"

and

"You live for the fight when it's all that you've got"

New Radicals - "You Get What You Give" for these lyrics:

"But when the night is falling, you cannot find the light
If you feel your dreams are dying, hold tight...

You've got the music in you
Don't let go, you've got the music in you
One dance left, this world is gonna pull through
Don't give up, you've got a reason to live"

and

"This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok, follow your heart
You're in harms way, I'm right behind"

Otherside - Red Hot Chili Peppers (melodic, they probably can relate to the tune)

Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day

Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Give it Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Saints Are Coming - The Skids (or the Green Day and U2 version)

When I Come Around - Green Day

Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Homecoming - Green Day

Sorry...I only listen to those 2 bands...

Faith Of The Heart - either Rod Stewart or whoever sings it during the "Enterprise" opening credits

I Can See Clearly Now - either Johnny Nash or Bob Marley

One or both of those, maybe?

"I Believe I Can Fly" by R Kelly
"Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin
"Thing Can Only Get Better" by Howard Jones
"Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House

Those usually pick me up when I'm feeling down.

That's a really personal thing... you'd have to balance their music tastes against the mood you're wanting to give (not too depressing but not too happy-poppy cheery lovetheworldisgood either)
