my friend broke her ankle. she had to have titanium plates, and screws "installed" Her body is rejecting them, and the screws are coming out. She is in a lot of pain and complaining of a red line going across her foot. Is that a possible allergic reaction? any other things it could be? Her foot is also incredibly itchy. She has had the screws in, since later August. about 4mos. Dr. wants her to keep the hardware in for 4-6 more months. But you can feel the screws against her skin. This just sounds strange to me, anyone with experience or med.practice, any comments would be insightful!!!!!!

You guys are giving me good feedback!
the skin is not hot.
Her Dr. decided to keep the hardware in and is aware of her symptoms.
what do you mean the screws are comnig out because of motion? What would cause this motion? what causes it not to heal properly?

The bone takes 6-8 weeks to heal under normal circumstances (so there is no purpose of keeping the hardware in beyond that time). If the bone does not heal properly, it goes on to a non-union or delayed union, then further intervention is required, such as bone stimulation. That being said, if your friend is having a red line across her foot, I would be worried about infection. If in fact there is infection, your friend needs antibiotics at the minimum. Make sure her doctor is aware of this finding. (by the way, the screws are coming out because there is motion and not because the body is rejecting them, so it sounds like there is a possibility that the fractures are not healed yet). Good luck

Is the red line left from the incision? (scar, not to worry) If not, is it hot and follows the line of a blood vessel? Does the doctor know? Blood poisoning will leave a red line that eventually goes up the leg and she needs the emergency room if her doctor is not available. The itching is usually a sign that the wound is healing. But if it's hot and itching and sore, could be infected. Be sure her doctor knows or call and talk to his nurse.

Get a bigger size. Also try boy shorts. Theyre usually more comfortable. If that still doesn't help just wear booty shorts as underwear. Those shouldn't cause lines. Also try a getting Jersey cotton. Its really comfortable.

if the red line starts travelling up the leg, towards the heart, RUSH TO THE HOSPITAL!!! that is usually a sign of infection, and she would need antibiotics, probably IV drugs... also, itching could be another sign of infection.

she should talk to her doctor, and if he won't help, she should talk to another doctor.

good luck!
