New Orleans was the murder capital of the world?

In 1994, New Orleans had 421 murders with about 450,000 people in the city. Thats a murder rate of 85.5 per 100,000 people, a rate which has not been matched by any U.S. city to date. If N.O. was the size of Los Angeles, it would have had over 3,000 murders that year. Incredible.

So was it the murder capital of the world??? or just the U.S.?

Edit: I'm not talking about places with war or genocide. I'm talking murder capital of a "civilized" western city.

it was the murder cap and thats that,a lot of people just cant understand hardtimes and ghetto life im born+raised in the N.O and will always love my city and miss the way it used to be before the storm,a lot of young men just get trapped in street life. live by da gun die by da gun thats just how it is in the hood and if you cant take the heet stay out the kitchen 'ya heard me'

is it safe to say that new orleans is the murder capital of the world? If you could even suggest that, then you do not know much about the rest of the world. Murder rates are far higher in many other places like big cities in South America, Jamaica, Iraq.

Well, I'm not sure about that one. Detroit is a good contender. However, N.O. is having a rough time right now with the crime rate up so terribly. So filled with gangs and people are shutting themselves up because they are afraid. You would think after all that financial aid from Katrina, they'd be happy to just be alive; but crime knows no time or state...or state of living, that's for sure.

I'm certain there are other places with more issues than New Orleans. Like Darfur. Or Baghdad. I would think those places would be more in a running for the murder capital of the world.
