This may seem odd, but it's similar to how you studied in school. Could you concentrate with something else in the background, even if it was classical?
As a fellow author, I have found that when I'm writing I can do better when what I listen to corrosponds with what I'm writting i.e. a fight scene means rock or metal while a love scene, a slower paced tune.
All in all it really is up to your preference; one way to decide is to sit down with nothing really in mind, set the music and just write, to see if it gets the mental juices flowing. If not, then try without the music and see what happens. Don't get mad if it doesn;t turn out the way you thought.

Sure. It works for me. Only classical music, though. It goes with the scenes I write and makes me feel like I'm watching a movie as I write the book. You know, background music in movie.

I hate having music as 'background' It is an insult the Beethoven/Mozart/Rossini to think of their work as mere wallpaper. Listen to it properly, or not at all.

I think that music can motivate you when you write, whenever I write I play music in the background, just not too loud because then you'll be distracted. But music is great for writing, and classical music is best in my opinion, that's what motivates me the most. Good luck with your book!

It is completely a personal preference. Although I would recommend only listening to instrumental music, as vocals can be distracting(if the vocals are in a foreign language that you dont understand it might not be so bad). I would suggest that you try different musicians/composers you like and pay attention to how well you can write while they are playing, also try writing in silence.

I listen to music all the time when I'm writing. I myself, don't like classical, so I usually listen to soft rock or a movie soundtrack while I write. Any kind of music that you like can be used.

Steven King claims to listen to very loud Rock music as he writes. He says that for him music is just another way of shutting the door. it surrounds him, keeps the mundane world out. When you write you want to get rid of the world so you can create your own.
