What's poofter bashing?

"Politically incorrect"? Depends on the politician.

Using derogatory comments to describe a group of people has nothing to do with "political incorrectness" just as refusing to do so does NOT define being "politically correct". That phrase was coined by someone who thought it was just fine to torment others and degrade entire groups of people. It continues to be coined by those that garishly mistreat those unlike themselves.

So, politically incorrect? No. Ignorant and vicious? Yes.

* In response to your letter: I'll give you this, JK. Many words would not be considered "derogatory" as it is the tone that often defines meanness. However, any word used derogatorily so often that it becomes ingrained in society is going to be met with defensiveness and anger. No gay person I know appreciates the word 'poofter'. It's implies characteristics that are not necessarily (if at all) inherent to the people it categorizes.

In the dictionary, 'derogatory' is defined as "tending to lessen the merit or reputation of a person or thing; disparaging." The implications of the phrase "poofter bashing" are certainly disparaging - not the term "bashing" in and of itself, but when it is utilized with a derogatory term (poofter) it becomes a disparaging phrase. Sorry, mate, I've got to stand by my word.

I don't see any political allusion in that statement, all I see is a social position equaling being black with being a woman in a time when they were both supressed. Depending on the time period and the location, women sometimes were treated like property (and still do in Mid East countries), just like African slaves, so there are similar situations when they were both treated the same, but never by the same society at the same time.
