Goldfish lay eggs. While a female goldfish may lay eggs with or without a male present, the eggs will not hatch if you do not have a male to fertilize them. Once the eggs have been fertilized, the eggs take up to a week to hatch, depending on temperature. At 50 to 60 degrees F, they may take up to one or even two weeks to hatch but at 75 degrees F, they may hatch in 4 to 5 days. The newborns will lay around on the bottom for another week or so and then begin to swim as their bladders develop. This is, of course, if your goldfish is really pregnant. Pregnant being a relative term as pregnant typically only refers to live-bearing animals.

I think it does not matter that when u bought them they were 1 inch, but it matter how old they were when u bought them? I mean if goldfish kept in 250-gallon pond from the beginning of their birth then they will reach their full growth size within 1 year and within 6 months they should have grown upto 4-5 inch. So, I think those goldfish are kept in small aquarium for longtime before you bought them. This could be the reason I should like.

Goldfish lay eggs. If your fish is starting to balloon out I'd look on yahoo for sites describing the deadly fish disease called Dropsy.

fish lay eggs. goldfish are also prone to get really fat so its hard to tell if they have eggs or are just fat. i have 2 goldfish the girls at the store swore were eggbound. both were just fat. one is a pearlscale and when they get bigger they look like swimming golf balls because they get that fat. it is really hard telling females and goldfish don't reproduce often. if you watch your goldfish males will chase other fish -- male or female. so if you have a chaser chances are its a male. it would initailly chase a female to encourage her to lay eggs but if there are none around they will chase other males. males also get little pimples on their gills when they hit puberty and anytime after when they are ready to mate.
