There are diseases that create the illusion of vampirism. Right down to the craving for blood and sensitivity to sunlight. But they're just people, not immortal undead.
Most of them learn to control themselves. Its not Satanic. Though there are some people who THINK they're vampires, or at least play the part because they like the lifestyle with the drinking of blood and all. Its a fetish.
Go down to New Orleans sometime. The Temple of the Vampire is there. Its an actual church.
Just a word of caution, don't go anywhere by yourself when you're in the French Quarter and most definately don't go off with any Temple members. There are nasty rumors about those people.

::Sigh:: Yes, there is. I don't think it's really that scary, but that's just me...You can't really tell who is a human vampire. Some of them might tell you, but then they might not be telling the truth. They all have the same signs and symptoms, though. No, it's not religious or satanic...It's much like a disease or a curse. There have been arguments that it's genetic, but I'm not sure if anyone really knows for sure.
Be careful what you poke your pretty little nose in...you just might find what you're searching for...

1) Are there human vampires?... Yes
2) Where are they?... Everywhere any other human lives.
3) How can you tell one?... You cannot unless the person tells you.
4) Is it a religious thing?... No.
5) Recent cases?... "Cases"? If you mean are there any alive today... yes.
Do some google time. A hint: look up Sphynxcat, sanguinarious.org, and the term HLV. Another hint: if anyone tells you they are thousands of years old and have superpowers, they are fibbing.

I think I can give you an answer because this thing with vampires has to do with my country (Romania).
Vampires (sometimes vampyres) are mythological or folkloric creatures believed to be the re-animated corpses of human beings who subsist on human or animal blood. In folklore, the term usually refers to the blood-drinking humans of Eastern European legends, but it is often extended to cover similar legendary creatures from other regions and cultures. The characteristics of vampires vary widely between these different traditions. Some cultures also have stories of non-human vampires, including real animals such as bats, dogs, and spiders, and mythical creatures such as the chupacabra.
You probably heard about Dracula. Most authorities believe the character of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel was based upon the historical figure Vlad Tepes (pronounced tse-pesh), who intermittently ruled an area of the Balkans called Wallachia in the mid 15th century. He was also called by the names Vlad III, Vlad Dracula and Vlad the Impaler. The word Tepes stands for "impaler" and was so coined because of Vlad’s propensity to punish victims by impaling them on stakes, then displaying them publicly to frighten his enemies and to warn would-be transgressors of his strict moral code. He is credited with killing between 40,000 to 100,000 people in this fashion.

There's a reason they're called mythological - they don't exist. Unless you live in an alternate dimension where they do, you are perfectly safe from vampires.

Didn't you hear people saying "Those Blood Suckers"?
The CEOs in some of our public trading companies are sucking money out of our seniors hard earned money (Blood money) who upon retirement put their "blood earned money" into the hands of "blooding sucking" CEOs e.g ENRON who sucks out every penny from our seniors life's savings.
