There are 2 ways of looking at it.
1. It's another silly disaster movie. The special effects are cool. The plot is predictable. Lots of faceless civilians die. Lots of cliches. One of the hero's sidekicks sacrifices himself to save the others. A librarian has to burn books to stay alive. Popcorn fun. Enjoy it.
2. It's left-wing propaganda deisgned to influence opinion of the scientifically illiterate masses (and it worked). The science is ridiculous. The basis of the whole movie, gigantic snow hurricanes that can freeze a man solid in 5 seconds : is thermodynamically impossible. Anyone who tells you different probably has never taken a basic physics class. Watch the South Park episode "2 days Before the Day After Tomorrow" to better understand.

The (ficticious) answer given by technique of the movie is that the wide typhoon is pulled quite chilly air down "from the ionosphere." On a broader and extra sensible word, increasing the planet's widely used temp some ranges will make some aspects less warm, because climate kinds will change.

This movie takes a big-budget, special-effects-filled look at what the world would look like if the greenhouse effect and global warming continued at such levels that they resulted in worldwide catastrophe and disaster, including multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of the next Ice Age. At the center of the story is a paleoclimatologist (a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past), Professor Jack Hall (Quaid), who tries to save the world from the effects of global warming while also trying to get to his son, Sam (Gyllenhaal), who was in New York City as part of a scholastic competition, when the city was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age. In addition to all of the other challenges Dr. Hall faces, he's also going against the flow as humanity races south to warmer climes, and he's nearly the only one going north...

It's a sci-fi flick about a sudden ice-age. It's very far fetched (this ice age strikes in only 3 days), but well-acted.
