IF you want to spend like two hours seeing what Tom Cruz's face would look like if he got hit by a truck, then I would recommend Vanilla Sky. It's definately dark and interesting.
Some great horror movies based on Stephen King stories are: The Shining and Children of the Corn
If you want some intelligent zombie horror I would recommend 28 Days Later, which also showcases the dark side of man.
Oh yea, Star Wars Episode 3 gets pretty dark too when Obi-Wan cuts of Anakins legs and dips his head in lava.

Ok, i know that there's a lot of options here, but not to make your head spin from choosing, how about this.
Nothing is more darker than the human condition, i mean real life situations, mundane daily life routine, given a good twist, but in this case, a helluva dark twist.
I thing horror or dark movies are like comedies, it can be funny to the person sitting next to you, but its not to you, same goes with horror, so whenever i want to step into this space, i allways opt for the kind of movie that can slip under your skin, really creeps you out, so the one movie that does it for me is by Alejandro Amenabar (From 'The Others') its called :
"Thesis"
Its twisted, smart and downright creepy, the kind of movie that not only makes you feel uneasy but dark as well. But dont take my word for it, just check it out.

some others stole my thunder but most definitely: Requiem For A Dream, The Audition (Asian horror), Crawlspace, Capturing The Friedmans, In A Glass Cage ( I saw this a few years ago on VHS and bought it recently on DVD and am still wondering why I bought a film that disturbs me, but damn, it did bother me at the time), Killer- A Journal Of Murder (starring James Woods), Pi (by the same director who brought us Requiem For A Dream) and read all Hubert Selby Jr. books. He is the author of Requiem For A Dream among many other DISTURBING stories. Get away from the visual horror and focus on storytelling because that will let your imagination run free and creep you out way MORE. For example, watch the black and white version of Carnival Of Souls, The Bad Seed. Watch the original version of The Hitcher. Duel is another decent one. Racing With The Devil starring Peter Fonda creeped me out a few years ago. The trend seems to be a lot of visual horror and I think it sucks because as one grows older, one has seen a lot of crap and wants to escape when watching a movie. There is no better escape than one's own imagination because no two people will ever have the exact same outlook. I could ramble on for days but there you go, watch everything that perks your interest, listen to anything that perks your interest and most importantly, READ, READ, READ anything that fascinates you or even nips at your thoughts because that is when you will get creeped out the most. Deliverance as a movie: Good.
Deliverance as a book: WOW. GREAT!!!!
Good things to you and yours,
LonesomeHurt

The best horror flick I ever saw was a Korean film with subtitles called, "A Tale Of Two Sister." It's a psychological thriller but that's all I'm going to tell you. If I told you any more I would be giving too much away!

Saw I and II. My husband likes the idea of the movie. I didn't want to see it since I thought it would be digusting. He said people that did some kind or wrong were put into a life or death situation with limited time to figure it out or die. They'd either die or live as a changed person. He hasn't seen the third one yet, but want too.

Santa Sangré (Holy Blood): a movie about a man and his mama, a famous concert pianist who loses her arms in a horrible accident. Her loving son, lets her continue as a great artist by becoming her arms...literally. Not to be missed: the depraved carnival goer who peels off his own ear and tries to jam it down some beautiful girls throat.
The Reflecting Skin: An almost impossible to describe flick about the miseries of childhood including a papa who has a child molestation charge hovering over him, the woman down the road who might be a vampire, the discovery of an "angel" and the natural decision to keep it in a shoe box under the bed.
The Tenant: Roman Polanski's classic descent into madness and transvestitism. Trelkovski, a hapless clerk moves into the apartment whose previous tenant flung herself out of the window. Soon, the less than charming neighbors begin hounding him about the slightest noises, trying to drag him into the politics of the building. Convinced that they are trying to drive him insane he attempts to outdo them by becoming the previous tenant. Noted for Polanski's turn as both Director and Star, the supporting cast is amazing with Shellie Winters as the horrific Concierge, and Melvin Douglas as the patrician monster of a Landlord. One of my all time favorite flicks.

The last 30 min of Hostel. The first hour was a bad softcore porn, but those 30 min were the first to really make me cringe at a movie since I saw Pet Semetary when I was about 7 years old.
