The World Wide Web is a component of the Internet. However, there are a lot of other things that exist on or within the Internet. Email exists on the Internet and is in no direct way connected to the Web. A huge number of business transactions happen over the Internet, never involving the Web.
The Internet is the foundation, the infrastructure, on which the Web is built. The Internet existed long before the Web.

I thought they were the same, and then I just looked it up: the difference is that a webpage is contained inside the internet. The internet is something that can transport any kind of data to anywhere, whereas a web page is just one portal of it. Web is short for "world wide web" or www.

They are different. The Internet is the whole network of interconnected computers that runs the Web and many other things. The Web is just one application on the Internet. Other Internet applications that you might be familiar with include email, FTP, IRC, VOIP, and bit-torrent.
