I don't file taxes and I'm very tax ignorant but I have a question for you.

My friend is a part-time student in New York, she has a 2 year old daughter and taxes were taken out of her check. She hasn't worked that long heck she only made $3795.00 for the 2006 year.

So does she have to file or not? and she wants to know is she eligible for the dependant credit thingy..

Yes, she should file so that she will get a refund for all her taxes in the mail. If she doesn't file, she won't be able to get that money back. As far as I understand, she is well below the earnings threshold and thus should get all her taxes back that she paid. Due to her low earnings, the dependant part won't matter as all her taxes will be returned anyway.

Yes, she should file. The only way to get a return of withholding is to file a return. Dependent upon her living arrangements and whether she can claim her daughter as a dependent, or not, she may qualify for an earned income tax credit.

for filling out the form..taxes are set so you get. a credit just for filling it out and bringing it in..
taxes are used for many things..and they want the records..so..they put in (think it is $50 credit) just for filling

if she qualifies for other credits..the tax auditor's will correct the form if it was not done correctly.....
she will also have a record of the employer's contributing to the persons pension........
lots of things..happen with that form..

Yes, she has to file; anyone who makes over $700 has to file.
