Mage is good for either faction. And the Alliance and Horde are not really about good and evil. They are more Order and Chaos, with good and evil people on both sides. and the Horde races for the most part are not terribly pretty, except the Blood Elf.

a mage is a mage. what makes a mage fun or any character type is how you play it, if you like playing evil characters play horde. If you like the good side then play alliance.

You should go and check out the racial for each race and see which one fits your playing style the best
