Religion is the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals that generally involve a faith in a spiritual nature and a study of inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom related to understanding human life. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to faith as well as to the larger shared systems of belief.
In the larger sense, religion is a communal system for the coherence of belief—typically focused on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, traditions, and rituals are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion can also be described as a way of life.
The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. "Organized religion" generally refers to an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion with a prescribed set of beliefs, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organization). Other religions believe in personal revelation and responsibility. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system,"[1] but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions.

Religion was born of ignorance and continues to exist out of fear from thousands of years passing down this mythical fear to generation after generation. Before there were weapons and laws, brute force was what determined the outcome of an altercation. Religion became the the civil law (the great equalizer) of the times and in many ways still acts as such today. Despite absolutely no scientific proof of God's existence people still fear death so much they refuse to believe scientific fact (mainly evolution). God has also become an excuse to kill other humans ie, if God is on our side we can do no wrong.
Religion is also very effective in controlling mass populations by using the fear of hell to keep the masses in line. Society needs religion. Society needs to have a God or Gods to prevent horrifying events that could happen if the human race realized that there was no afterlife punishment to face for their actions while alive. Atheists and agnostics are notably the most intelligent humans (scientists, doctors etc.) They are shunned for their opinions by far less educated people simply because of this fear organized religion has generated.
So to put your question into a one line answer I'd say: "Religion is a myth used for the control and manipulation of the majority of the human populace and is an excuse to eliminate those who think differently".

i think religion is just another form of enslaving people on earth, so they can be tied down to be expecting some kind of reward some where else. one needs to think twice when told of things that happen at a place no one has even gone an come back.

I am sorry you find this to be a joke. The meaning of religion is to help you find meaning and purpose for your life. I find that in being a Christian and in following the teachings of the Bible. Jesus is my Savior and He is preparing a place in heaven for me.
