When I left work to ride home tonight, I checked the thermometer. 8 below. I knew my fingers would get cold, but for some reason I was so comfortable that I found myself missing the long commute I used to have.

Hidden ice is what kept me from going out in the snow before, I did go sliding once. The worst we've had so far is a couple days of slushpack on the road. I travel a familiar route, and the locals have become used to seeing me out there. Skis? That's a new one!

22 degrees was my 'record'. i live in an area where ice can hide, and if the ice dont get ya, the sand/road gravel probably will.

So, how are your fingers now ?? Frostbitten, black, purple and white ? If so, after you get out of the hospital, I'm sure you won't forget that ride for the rest of your life.. If not, consider yourself VERY lucky ! I rode my first bike year-round here in the Northeast, and NOT just on sunny days.. People thought I was / am nuts, but even today an on / off road bike with knobby tires and the proper riding gear is very do-able DURING THE DAY !! ONLY A SUICIDAL MANIAC rides at night in the winter on a cycle !! Best hand protection for winter cycle riding ? The BEST hunters mittens / gloves you can find, the type with the seperate trigger finger.. You'll need that to operate the clutch & brake levers.. Most AFFORDABLE on / off road bikes don't make enough power to run electric heated clothing, but as always, layers still work.. Watch for ICE & enjoy, summer's coming !

After 40 years of riding i have finally decided that it is no fun riding in the wet of the cold so i only bring out my scoot when the sun comes out but I'm lucky because the sun is out all year round were i live and the roads are good, gets a little chilly in the winter but i think the lowest we've had here is 5 below and it was a fine day so we could ride even then. we don't have snow just a little ice and frost so you can all eat your heart out, riding in NewZealand is the tops.

Around 28 to 30 degrees - I can ride in the teens but ice is the problem and fear. Have a ride slide out on you once and that is enough. Got electric grips and a Fieldsheer suit so only my toes get cold. Plus it is a 45 mile run to work .

I ride down to 35 F. I don't stop because of the cold, I stop because of the potential for ice. In shady spots the temperature can be a few degrees cooler and form ice. That's why I stop riding when it's a few degrees above freezing. Slipping around on ice is not fun. I'd rather put my money into accessories for my bike or towards a bike trip in the spring than repair bills to my bike or me should I wipe out on a piece of ice.

here in New Hampshire you ride when you can!if the roads are dry Go for it.Big concern is always ice,Once we have a snow pack even the warmest days the roads will puddle up and refreeze in the evening.I do have a winter bike(KLR 650)that the salt dosent seem to bother(or I don't care).I do raise a few thumbs up when i lash my skies to my bike and head out for a day on the slopes.I even broke out my big shiny bike on Xmas day this year for a day at Mt Sunapee!

If you got enough leather to block the wind and enough clothing underneath for the chill, then who cares how cold it is? Just leave early so you can take your time instead of being caught by suprise be the ice.

We got caught coming back from Bike Week one year and had to follow the plows. I'll take cold over snow any day.

We have rode in a blizzard with wind chill at -30 in support of our local Toys For Tots program .... it all depends on how big your heart is.... and if you remembered to turn the electric blanket on before you left home.
