try going to your local radio stations website they usually have a countdown that you can listen to online.
www.thehothits.com.au
www.take40.com.au
these two are both australian radio stations that are streamed online also.
www.last.fm is a great music site that lets you preview songs by almost every artist.

all three of these sites are completely free.

purevolume.com links you to really great bands. signed and not signed. and it'll let you make a playlist.

http://www.last.fm/ let's you make your own "radio" station. yahoo does this too
