I was copying tracks off a store bought music CD to my Itunes library when all of a sudden after all the tracks were copied the disk literally blew up in my CD drive, shards of broken glass were everywhere, what is wrong with my drive?

This is an internal Philips CD-RW drive for a desktop PC.

There was nothing wrong with your CD Drive.. I think the you didn't insert the CD properly. When the CD drive rotated the CD was broken and shredded.

Now, since the CD was shredded from inside the lens could be damaged. Get an expert to clean the drive before you use it further.

Any cd drive can do this. It happens when it is spinning at a high speed and the drive is opened. Wether you opened it or it was still reading or writing to the disk it is not that uncommon

i would just buy a new burner drive since there is good odds its damaged from a cd explosion. cds cant just explode in your system because they dont spin fast enough to do that but if it comes off of the spindle it can definately hit something and shatter. look on newegg.com for a new drive, should be under $30 for a high quality one.

Replace the drive, there are shards of the CD left in the drive that will cause further damage if you run the drive. CD-RWs aren't that expensive.
