Yes, only 50 but a person may be confused by the fact the news says the united states but only shows the Continental united states then at times show these apparently 2 new states (Alaska and Hawaii) off the southern coast of California. I live in Alaska and it's amazing how many people have no clue we are part of the USA or where Alaska even is on a map. I can only imagine that the people of Hawaii feel about the same way.

What "TV and News" say that?? It's 50 states and has been since 1959.
Some of the other answerers don't know what they are talking about.
While Puerto Rico is a Territory with Commonwealth status,
Columbia is a District (hence D.C.) NOT a Commonwealth. D.C. has no governor or legislature. Aside from a weak mayoral/council system of municipal government for the City of Washington, Congress has ultimate authority over the district.
Also, technically, four of the 50 states call themselves a "Commonwealth", but this has no constitutional impact and are considered states:
Kentucky
Virignia
Massachusetts
Pennsylvania

Only 50 states. Strippers on Howard Stern say 52 all the time though.

There are not 52 states. However, the District of Columbia likes to think of itself as a state of its own. I don't know what the other one is though.

The U.S. has many Commonwealths and dependencies, among them Puerto Rico, but you are correct that the United States has only 50 true states.
