We are going back to So Lake Tahoe again this May for vacation and interested in doing a day trip somewhere. We have done all the Lake activities over the course of our last 3 visits so we are ready to venture out farther to broaden our horizions. Any suggestions?!

Looking for scenic drives, perhaps with a nice late afternoon meal at a cool place? No casinos for us, we have enough of that in Tahoe and of course, we driven around the lake a number of times. We were thinking of Yosemite but the back road in is still closed in May. Any other suggestions? Thanks!!

Reno is different (a mini Las Vegas) but you have casinos near South Lake Tahoe.
So it's a bit pointless if your after something different.
If you have done the drive right around Tahoe already then I would go to Carson City. It's only a 30 mile drive.
Scenic all the way.
For a state capitol it is not a large city but very historical and there are some lovely old buildings:
The Capitol (the grounds of which are open to the public all year)
Governor's Mansion
The old CC Post Office
I have found the link to the city's Convention & Visitor's Bureau for you
It has historical information, attractions, recreation and visitor's info:

Yes, Virginia City is another possibility for a day trip, (43miles from South Lake Tahoe).
It is even more historical than Carson City!
Have a look at these photos:

Finally, a link to the city's Convention & Visitor's Bureau (full of tourist infomation):
