Think about the weather of San Francisco as opposed to the weather in the desert. The desert (which is very dry) gets very hot during the day and cools off quickly at night. San Francisco (which is surround by water and moisture) has a much more mild temperature influx during the course of a day.

That's because water has a very high specific heat. It takes more energy to heat water than it does to heat sand. So, to answer your question, the sand would be warmer than the water, and really the temperature inside the bottle would depend on what's inside the thermometer, what the bottle is resting on, and the specific heat of the material the bottle is made of.

Key here is water is a better conductor of heat than sand. Sand is a poor conductor of heat. Air is a poor conductor of heat. Water is so much better. Take a look in your physics book, for the SPECIFIC HEAT of these substances and you will see the huge differences.

The answer is (1)

its about convection, conduction and radiation modes of heat transfer.
the empty will heat quicky followed by water and the last to heat would be sand, but when brought in shade the first where temp. falls is in the same order as that of acquiring heat

i'm pretty sure sand. because for the temp. vs. energy thing for water is pretty high. that's why water heated in the microwave will heat slower than the mug you put it in. make sense?
