Why do some drummers play with their hands crossed over each other and others don't ? Is it just a personal preference or is there a reason behind it?

To be in sync with feet
For most right handed
Cymbals are played (basically) on one and three like bass drum.(right foot)

Snare is played on two and four along with hi-hat pedal(left side) plus it would be hard to reach all cymbals with left

If you can imagine pedaling a bike with feet and hands

I'm pretty sure that all drummers cross their hands at some point during playing.

Most drummers cross their hands when they are playing the high hat with their right hand and the snare with their left. If they play the ride cymbal they will open up and uncross their hands. This is probably because it makes sense to keep playing the snare with their left hand. The high hat is typically on their left because they use their left foot to control it and their right foot for the bass drum.

Alot rock drummers play with their hands straight. It gives them more strike.
Jazz, and many other types play with their hands crossed, its just a different technique.

Playing with your hands crossed is the "proper" way to play drums. People that don't have developed a stage persona or are left handed and prefer this method.

I'm a drummer and I can tell you frankly that it's a matter of preference.

the high-hat keeps the beat
so if you are right handed and your high-hat is on the left
then your arms cross
