Is the movie "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" really based on actual events?

They can say "based on" when there is only a shred of truth involved. Ed Gein was a mass murderer but no chainsaw involved. Actually Psycho was based loosely on the Ed Gein case in MN. Mainly the part about him keeping his mother's part of the house exactly as it was many years before when she died.

As noted on the site, serial killer Ed Gein was the basis for Leatherface, Anthony Perkins in Psycho, and Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. However, none of them are 100% copies of him, hence "based" on actual events.
