They can say "based on" when there is only a shred of truth involved. Ed Gein was a mass murderer but no chainsaw involved. Actually Psycho was based loosely on the Ed Gein case in MN. Mainly the part about him keeping his mother's part of the house exactly as it was many years before when she died.

It was not based on a true story. There was a man who killed only women with a chainsaw. He wasn't in Texas.

Some fact yes. However I find that movie to be a remake of about 4-5 different versions before it. Yes they do exsist.
