My Great Uncle George embodied the spirit of the Irish Travelers. He was my favorite uncle. He would fascinate me with stories of Ireland when I was young. I would like like to find some symbol, icon or some way of showing that I identify with these people in the form of a tattoo. Any suggestions?

The Irish Traveller Movement have a logo on their site which comprises of a horseshoe and the letters ITM incorporated into a 'trailer' or mobile home picture. Perhaps you could use this sign.

I fully support anyone wanting to express themselves with ink! However, anytime you have a symbol from another language, you should find someone who USES the language to confirm that the symbol you want actually MEANS what it says. I've seen too many bad, bad, bad tattoos that look cool until you find out what it really means. Especially b/c tattoo artists may not have accurate translations. They just put what you want b/c you want it and don't ask many questions! Also, be careful where on your hip you want it. Don't forget about kids in the future. My best friend has a beautiful orchid tattoo on her hip bone from college 4 years ago. I should say it was beautiful. Now it's stretched and faded, even though she got back to her original weight after her kid was born.

Rhiannon is a Welsh(Irish) goddess of horses and dreams. In that time, horses were transportation, so she is also a goddess of travel. A horse or horse symbol would pay tribute, I believe.

If not, I think that an Irish flag would be a wonderful symbol of both heritage, and travel.

No not on a quick web search. They may have their own secret symbol. But since they are travelers and still use the old method of travel . One with a horse drawn wagon/house would suffice as that is what they travel in.Pictures are available in books.

well i can tell you there is nothing at all that you could get tattooed on yourself that they would recognise as an emblem ??? you would have to bare it in their company point it out and explain it, cos they got better things to do than notice tattooes how many peoples tattooes have you taken notice of for gods sake, the best thing to do is mix with them and be tidy with them, have a drink have a deal, an if you are unable to get in their company, then how would they know bout the tat?

God commanded that men do not make any "cuttings" on the body. i believe tatooing falls under that definition.
if you already have some tatoos just dont add to them. YOU DONT need them.
