It might be a little late for this, but you should have said you had to honor your first commitment when you got your second invitation. Unless there is a pressing reason to pick one over the other?

You have an obligation to your family first....you can ask if it matters to them, but I think you already know it does....so explain to your friend....you can go to a movie anytime....but explain you have to spend the evening with your family. Your friend should understand.
