my dream job is being a movie director, but how in the hell do you get started?

how could an independent writer/director with no film school credentials find a producer?

Most attend film school and direct small student films. I suggest taking classes on television broadcasting at the high school or college level to become familiar with the terms and equipment.
I would suggest getting the movie "El Mariachi" from director Robert Rodriguez and watch it with his comentary playing. He tells how everything was done and why things were done certain ways. His "film school" lessons on the other movies he's directed are also good, but "El Mariachi" is the best place to start.

How to get started?
START. MAKING. MOVIES.
Get a digital video camera. Figure out how to use editing software. Start shooting and editing.
Make silly home movies for your friends. Put something on Youtube. Get something on public access TV. Enter something in a local film festival. As in almost anything, start small, and work your way up. Eventually take film school classes and enter more festivals, if only to build some contacts.
And ask yourself, if you have never done such things, never picked up a camera or thought about little ideas for movies...
If you use your spending money on a Playstation rather than get a cheap video camera.
Do you REALLY want to be a movie director?
Or do you just want to be rich and famous?

I wanna be a movie director too ! i think you should never give up, go to film school, and follow your dreams thats all i can say

you could join the mark burnette and steven spielberg collaborated upcoming reality show calles "on the lot". it is an american idol or apprentice type that is looking for the best director! if you win, you might direct a film under dreamworks, goodluck!!!
