My answers may be a little different than some of the other ones posted. For an elementary teacher it is obviously different from a high school teacher. Elementary teachers should be nurturing, patient, fun, and patient. Did I mention patient? They also can't let kids get away with attitude... when a grade 2 boy can give you attitude in front of a whole class, and make you look sufficiently stupid, your in trouble.
For High School teachers it is a little different. Knowledge of a subject is great, but they have to accept that they don't know everything.... high school kids find it really annoying when a teacher can't admit that they don't know something. My best high school teachers were the ones that hung out with us after school (not in a weird lets go shopping and talk about boys way). One teacher played sports with a buddy of mine, I would go over to dinner at a couple of my other favorite teachers houses. They treated you on an equal level, and then we trusted them in return. We didn't care if they were geniuses or what not, and they didn't have to discipline us because we felt bad when we ticked off a teacher we liked. Treating my friends and I as equals is what made a lot of our teachers not just great educators, but our life long friends.

an effective teacher must understand that not all people learn the same way and be flexible enough in the subject matter to be able to explain it in different formats and examples. When a students does not appear to understand a subject - at times the point of view is the problem not the learning ablity.

To really take the time to explain things to kids and if there are some who need extra help , do this .I had a teacher a long time ago that would tell us stories about his times in the service , little things that happened to him and when he was done he would talk to us in length about our studies and we all loved him and couldnt wait to get into class and when the year was up we cried because we wouldnt have him anymore the next year .He was great , and its something when your a kid and cant wait to get into class , and I remember him to this day .

Effective teaching in the classroom comes from one who understands a child"s need and who is willing to accept the child for who they are. We are not only teachers to our children. They look up to us as role models, as someone who cares for them and accepts them. I have found that being a good teacher encompasses many things. The one thing that matters most is that every child you teach, knows that you as their teacher, cares for them and is concerned about their well-being. Once that is established, their response is immediate.

The most effective teachers made me truly feel like I was part of what we were studying, and truly understand... depends on your subject also.

Someone who knows their subject, prepares lessons that stimulate and challenge students. Someone who enjoys working with children and is both firm and consistent with discipline but has good humour and a caring attitude.
