You can do this yourself but you must have a good vacuum. A good shop vac with atleast 5 hp and good suction will work. You go to every register and open it up and stick the hose down there as far as you can until you don't hear it picking anything else up.

DO NOT CLEAN HEATING DUCTS. Plain waste of money and nonsense.
I have a business where i sell HEPA filters to hospital and Clean rooms and I have equipment to test for Particulate and dust in air supplies.

Cleaning air ducts DOES NOT improve the cleanliness of air supply. In fact, it does the exact opposite. It stirs up dust within the duct system that is laying idle and doing no harm. I have proven this many times with test equipment.

If you clean those ducts it will take WEEKS before they settle down again and you have air quality equal to what you had before duct cleaning.

Buy yourself a good Electrostatic cleaner for the furnace and dont waste that money on nonsense duct cleaning. That Electrostatic will remove Bacteria, Viruses, dust, Mold and Mildew, and ODOR from the registers outcoming air.

Wisest thing to do is look up Heating and A/C repair in your yellow pages and give them a call.
I'm sure they would give you a free estimate.
