Well, I'm certainly no expert but I always thought there were laws that mandate mental health professionals to alert the authorities if their patient confides that they plan to harm another person. I don't think "doctor-patient confidentiality" includes murder.

a smart *** answer....tell her to let him wail on her awhile than shot away..call the police and tell them she shot her husband and she was afraid he was going to kill her........

now, for the real world....I take it there is a patient confidentiality involved here.....first try to convince her to leave this man before she does something as drastic as this....inform her that if she would happen to do what she said ..that the patient confidentiality would be null and void in a court room and since she has informed you in advance of her plans it would be premeditate murder ... and by law you would have no choice but to testify....and if she persist in this line of thinking you will have to drop her as a patient......but you will still be called to testify if anything should happen.....and that you needed to inform her of this.....

you really are in a "damn if you ,damn if you don't " predicament....I don't envy you.....talk to some of you colleagues and see what their ideas on the matter is...and maybe a lawyer who specializes in criminal law........

That don't put you in a very good position.

1. You have to tell the police.

2. If you tell the police you haven't really helped her.

if she is going to harm herself, or another, or break the law (I believe those are the 3), you can break confidentiality... but only to the courts or police... was she venting, talking out of anger, or serious?

ask questions regarding the aftermath to help her realize how she would feel and hopefully she'll change her mind.
