If you are a high school senior applying to UCLA, and in your transcript you have written that you got a C in chemistry, but have had straight A's and B's all your other classes, and have exceeded the 'A-G' requirements. You also have good SAT scores, an ACT. Will they still take you in?

Even if you dont plan to major in that subject.

And you have also done some good extra curricular activities.

My chemistry Teacher is the biggest putdown in the world. He makes it seem like chemistry is really important as if it was the only thing to live for. He has put almost every student down about chemistry.

If we were talking one of the Ivies you might be in trouble, but truth be told UCLA isn't a terribly competative school to get into, and certainly one C will not kill your chances (I am a grad student there, and while I've had a lot of smart students, I have had many students that I can promise were not straight A students in high school). Realize also that UCLA takes a LOT of students, and many of the students they accept turn down the acceptance. This isn't like Harvard where everyone except for maybe 10 people take the offer.

So you should be fine.

By the way, last I checked the UC's no longer offer preference based on student's race, so being hispanic will probably not help you. Nonetheless, you seem to have a solid record so far, and that's all you can ever expect of yourself as far as admissions goes. Good luck!!

UCLA gets the most applicants out of the other UC's, and more applicants mean more competition. However, one "C" would not make you a non-qualified applicant. As long as your grade point average is competitive (meaning around 4.0 or above) and you have a great SAT score, you should be a good candidate for UCLA. I would suggest you explain your situation in your personal statement.

If you're hispanic, it does help you chances.

However, it's all about your overall academic record. It's not how many C's you have. It's if your transcript looks difficult and the overall GPA is in the range they'll accept. How wide the range is changes based on your SAT score, extra currics, your race, etc.
