So if you want a thesis that ties together computer networking, satellite communication and a network protocol, then you'd probably be looking to develop a TCP/IP-based multicast file transfer application that delivers files with both flow control and a means to detect and/or correct errors dynamically. So you would have to develop a reliable, client-server based, multicast FTP that is immune to the long round trip delay caused by satellite connections. The trouble is, such protocols already exist (I developed a rudimentary version of one myself a few years back) and may not be worth a PhD thesis. But you might look into what is the latest research and challenges with such protocols, and then take on one of those challenges to extend the idea and develop something new. Good luck.
