what color shirts look best w/ a black suit for a company party - cocktail attire?

i asked a question earlier if a brown shirt would go w/ a black suit, and apparently it does not (which i didn't know). i rarely ever wear suits, last time was for graduation.

i have a company party coming up next week and the dress is cocktail attire. i have a black suit, but i'm not sure what color dress shirt to wear. i like striped dress shirts a lot, but do those go with a plain all black suit? if so, what are some colors that would fit well. i have brown eyes and black hair if that helps. i don't really like really bright colors either, so i'm not sure whats the best color to match my black suit.

i'd really appreciate any suggestions (and if possible, perhaps links to pictures of shirts that would look good?)

thanks for the answers so far. i wasn't planning on wearing a tie, but should i? it's not an extremely formal party, and should be pretty casual even though its cocktail attire.

from the responses so far, it looks like striped shirts are bad with a solid black suit?

a black shirt or a navy blue striped shirt would look good with a black suit

If you want to look dashing try a lavender shirt. It will catch any girls eye and it is classey. If you choose a mint shirt try a black tie with it that goes quite well. White goes with everything . Black and blue also match up quite well. Yellow and black is a winning combination also,just make sure the colors are pastels and the ties are a little darker. Where your shirt well and with confidence and you will be surprised at the admiring looks you will get. The best to you and have a good time!

Well, there's always, white, but how boring. I like black on black. Black shirt, black tie, black suit. Then there is gray, pink, baby blue, depends what look you are going for. Find out the wedding colors, and go with them. But if you are wearing a suit, yes, wear a tie.

I would say go to a department store and describe your suit to a sales person and the event you are going to and they will be able to help you the best. Since we can see what you look like to know what colors would look best. They can also fit you for the perfect ****.
or another idea is go to target.com and pick dress

well i would say if u wanna add some "pazazz" to go with a bright dress shirt but if u dont like bright dress shirts....well number one u can wear anything with black (almost.. i would say just no stripes, gray or brown).. uh i would say mabey a dark red or maroon. or evan a black dress shirt with a bright babey blue tie...(or lime, yellow u get the idea).. but if not the dark red/maroon i would say just go to a suit / formal wear store and talk to somebody there.

go with a drak blue or red maybe even a whitish Pink. Real men wear pink. Get over it's true. Dark blue that would go best, oh maybe a green. Oh lord I'm no help

You could wear a khaki colored shirt. The tan/black color combo is really hot right now.

i would try a pastel color any colors fine, but no stripes, ur tie could be striped tho i guess

Not stripes....try solids like, light pink or ligth blue, or olive green or white.

if ur tanner-darkish.. go with a suttle lime colour.. i know it sounds weird but my friends wore it with their black suits and it looked hot!..

but if ur lighter.. stick with pastel light colours like light blue and purples..
