Yes we would - the problem is not the penalty, the problem is the low likelihood of being punished in the first place, which makes crime an attractive proposition for many people.
By the way, this is Yahoo answers UK and Ireland, so how is it that most responders think we are talking about the USA?

Well, if the death penalty carried a quick death instead of these guys sitting on death row for years it would certainly help. I think that prisons would still be very crowded and the main reason is drugs. So many people are in prison for drugs instead of rape and murder that it has caused the overcrowding. Just my opinion

We still have the death penalty, don't we?
No, it wouldn't help overcrowding in prisons, because not enough crimes would get prosecuted for the death penalty anyway due to plea bargaining and a lot of other things (it's rare).
Increasing the death penalty WOULD make the already overcrowded justice system more overcrowded (it takes forever to process a death penalty case with all the appeals and stuff).

some states still have death penalty.. The problem is death turns out to be 20 or more years after sentencing.. IF they would actaully carry out the sentence in a reasonable time (within 3 months).. there would be plenty of room in prisons.. Another big thing is the illegals.. they get arrested and put in jail.. Y not ship their azzes back to their own country.. U know if they get arrested for robbery, the next time could be rape or murder..

We don't have the death penalty? When was that changed? Hell honey in Texas not only do we have the death penalty we are putting in an express lane! No need for people sentenced to death to sit there for years and years taking up at least 150,000 a yr in tax payers money per inmate!

38 states have the death penalty. Prisons are overcrowded because of the large number of people locked up for low level and non violent crimes.

Imposition of death penalty will weed out prisons of felons and the people will pay lower taxes to feed them.

It would help if you defined who "we" is. Do you live in a country or, if the U.S., a state that doesn't have capital punishment? I'm assuming you do, based on your question, but the short answer is yes; as long as a society has laws and people who break them and are sent to prisons, there is a potential for overcrowding.

Depends on who we have carry out the death sentence. Maybe we could star a prisoner exchange program with the Iraqi's! They run them through in weeks, not years.
