I've got this box thing, where the speakers are connected to. When I turn it up, it increases the bass in the volume. It's pretty big and heavy.

That is a single bass unit it puts out the really low tones in your music. You do not need two of them because its vibrations are felt throughout the room

That thingy is called subwoofer. You can place it anywhere. It is - the word is - omnidirectional. Meaning, it will give you the base effects in the room regardless of where it is placed.

I have placed mine under the computer table, hidden. It gives fantastic sound.

Are you referring to that part of the system - woofer box - which supprts the speakers and without which the speakers will not function?
