530 is standard. To change to a 520 you'd have to change sprockets as well to ones made for 520 chain.
When I put new chain and sprockets on my '85 XLS Sportster I used RK O ring chain. After the initial "break-in" stretching, I hardly had to adjust it over the next few years. An O ring chain needs less cleaning and lubrication (since lube is inside the O rings on the chain) and runs quieter than a standard chain.
Unless you're planning on selling the bike anytime soon, the O ring chain is worth the extra money.

I'm not positive, and I didn't look it up, so don't quote me. I believe they are both 50 Series (which is the size 40 is smaller,60 bigger). I also think the 20 would be the lighter duty chain. If this is truly the case, do NOT use the 520. One time I popped the clutch in 2nd on a Suzuki GS425L (423cc). Not only did the front come up, I badly stretched a new 530 chain. Your Sportster. with at least twice the displacement and the famous V-Twin torque would definitely tear up a lesser one.

The only differance between the two is WIDTH of the rollers, and of course weight, because of more material! Sprockets run with 530 chain have more contact area, thus more load area, and usually last longer. stick with a good 530 set-up,check the "tensil-strength" of the chain, buy the strogest you can afford ,it will stretch less, last longer.ALLWAYS replace chain and srockets as a set, as the chain stretches it wears the sprockets

I can almost read your mind,"I can get this 520 kit with the sprockets off of e-bay for half the cost of the oem stuff".The reason most people go to a lighter chain is because of the price and weight .The bike maker put the bigger chain on there for a reason, because of the torque! If you actually believe that you can tell the weight difference between the 2,you need to be on the track circuit and not the street. The cheaper smaller chain will not hold up like the big one will and you will see hooked sprockets and worn chain before it is time to change them...Get the right stuff

the difference is weight and the ability of the chain to resist stretching I'm pretty sure the stock chain would be a 530 standard chain...
