When did the automobile become something that every family had? What kind? Was it a car or a truck that got popular first?
Oh, and what about a bus?

They were first being produced in the late 1800's by Oldsmobile. Shortly after in 1903, Ford began mass producing their autos. These cars were only a few hundred dollars brand new in their time, but no one could afford them. Cars were becoming more of a family thing in the late 20's, early 30's.
Buses, I haven't the slightest clue...

The Ford Model T (1908-1927) is the most revolutionary car ever built: The first true, mass-produced, everyman's car. By the time the Model A was introduced in 1928, the car had become a ubiquitious invention, and already there were paved highways being built.

Until cars like the mass produced Model T began production (and remember, the first Model T s were not mass produced), autos were too expensive for the average family. Two things changed- first in late 1913, the Ford Motor Company started using the assembly line for production of Model T s at the Highland Park Model T Plant, and second, Ford raised the pay to $5 a day, double what others were making, and shorted the work day, helping to make his employees stay longer. Before that they had to hire ten to get one to stay! That was launched in early 1914. So between have a much larger plant (the Highland Park Plant vs. the old Piquette Avenue plant) production of Ford cars rose from 10,607 in 1908-1909 to 308, 213 by 1914-15. This drastically reduced the cost to make one. Still, you had to have mechanical skills to own, start and drive one. In fact, Henry Ford s wife drove a Detroit Electric at first. My grandfather was the draftsman to Henry Ford s Chief Engineer at the Highland Park plant during those all important years, Mr. Edward Gray. Gray designed the power plants that supplied electricity to the plant and was the head man doing the floor layouts for the sections of the plant that would be the first modern assembly line in auto history. One of the power plant engines he designed is in the Henry Ford Museum. My grandparents, although they lived just blocks from the plant, didn t buy their first Model T until 1915, after the time that Edward Gray left Ford Motor. Grandpa continued to work for Gray in Detroit until 1919, he started working for him in Oil City, PA, in 1906 and that s where Gray, who was manager and co-owner of Riverside Engine, had the first power plant engine built before production of the next ten when to Ohio.
So to answer your question, it was the mid-1920s that cars became more common, although the cities saw many cars earlier than that- less pollution than thousands of horses! No barns, no loads of hay, no horse urine and poo running down the streets. It was said that you could smell a city long before you would see it before cars took over!
