I'd go for the replacement parts and repair the pump myself. If you really feel you *must* buy a new pump look at the Tetra pumps only because they seem to stay quieter longer than any other pump I've ever owned and they're as easy as all the others to repair. But with the economics and eco-friendliness of pump repair...

Most of the better brands of air pumps sell replacement parts for the inside that will get your old pump running like new much cheaper than buying a new one.

When buying a pump the most important features are volume and head pressure. Volume is just that, how much air can it move. Head pressure will tell you how much air it moves at certain depths. with an 80 gallon tank, you need something that will handle the deeper water as well as move plenty of air. If you buy one with added head pressure ability it will last a bit longer than one that can barely supply your needs.

It sounds like your old one was doing the job, personally I would go for a repair kit. You should be able to find one online easily if you have a fairly common brand of pump.

You don't need the BEST air pump. Anything that makes bubbles or creates a break in the surface will suffice. Most aqauriums don't even need a pump. If your filter return water moves the surface enough, that will sufficiently oxygenate your water. I have a 55gal and NO 02 pump and never had a problem in the last few yrs.
